Show Notes

Welcome to the Somerset Emotional Wellbeing (SEW) podcast!

In this episode, The Parent-Infant Relationship, our hosts Dr. Peter Bagshaw and Dr. Kate Staveley are joined by Louise Webb from NHS Somerset and Marie Pilton from Somerset NHS Foundation Trust to discuss what the parent-infant relationship is, why it is important to nurture and build that relationship, and what you can do, and how you can seek support, if difficulties arise.

Louise and Marie would also like to advise parents to seek support from their Midwife, Health Visitor or GP; they can provide support and listen to your needs and, if necessary, refer onto other agencies.

The SEW podcast is a free weekly show hosted by Dr. Andrew Tresidder, Dr. Peter Bagshaw and Dr. Kate Staveley. In each episode, the doctors discuss a different topic related to mental and emotional wellbeing and often invite expert guests to join them in conversation. The show is aimed at the people of Somerset and beyond; the advice and guidance provided should apply to anybody who needs it, whenever they need it.

All episodes of SEW are now available to listen to free through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Deezer, Google Podcasts, Amazon Podcasts, Somerset Emotional Wellbeing or wherever you get your podcasts!

Tiny Happy People – The BBC’s Tiny Happy People can help you develop your child’s language and communication skills, so they get the best start in life. We’ll show you why and how you can bond with your child, before they’re born and throughout their early lives – it’s never too early to start.

Dad Matters - We aim to help dads have successful relationships with their families, and to support dads with anxiety, stress and mental health issues. We hope to get dads engaged with services that have traditionally been targeted at mums, and to train & support volunteer dads to work with us.

The Association for Infant Mental Health - Getting to Know Your Baby Resources - Getting to Know Your Baby videos have been designed to help parents, caregivers, and health professionals to know how to support the development of a baby’s emotional wellbeing.

ICON- The idea for the ICON programme and the different interventions within it was conceived by Dr Suzanne Smith PhD following a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travel Fellowship to USA and Canada in 2016 which included the study of effective interventions and research into the prevention of Abusive Head Trauma (AHT).  Research suggests that some lose control when a baby’s crying becomes too much.  Some go on to shake a baby with devastating consequences.  Suzanne found that the most effective evidence-based programmes studied provide a simple message that supports parents/caregivers to cope with infant crying. Apart from preventing AHT, most people who have ever cared for a baby appreciate some advice about how to comfort a crying baby and how to cope when it goes on for a long time.

Towards Tomorrow Together - Towards Tomorrow Together provide support, information and resources to people affected by baby loss – at any time, for any reason. We walk with you as you take steps Towards Tomorrow, joining you at the time of your loss, as you grieve and during any future pregnancies.

Sands - We work to support anyone affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby. We also carry out vital work to improve maternity safety through targeted research, campaigning for change, working with government and reducing inequalities in healthcare to save babies' lives.
